Because if the board had been better, I would have kept it, adding some reverb to soften Jerry’s very up-front vocals. But the sound quality is low with the SBD being a bit oversaturated and distorted. I have to honestly admit that this version is a good one. But their needs to be a little control of the vocal and/or recording instruments to get the plane’s wings past Mach 1. I can appreciate everyone lauding over Golden Road. I NEED that shock wave of controlled quality! All other live versions never could break 770 MPH - shuddering - to then break up and explode into a million pieces. And I just can’t listen to any of the live versions. I feel personally, they only broke that barrier once in the studio for their first album. The song reminds me allot of what jet airplanes go through trying to break the sound barrier. Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion) is a two minute, balls-to-the-wall, hypersonic missile of youth and masculine testosterone that always comes close to being an out-of-control mess with every attempt. I ought to get myself one of these, if for no other reason than for the Sinatra song, the nutty 3/4 Dawg version y todos mis amigos from Monte rrey. Don't recall the model but it looks like one of the H1456 models. The guy decided to put it back in to use and it was actually a pretty nice guitar iirc. Were some of these laminate tops and some solid? If so did that change over time or was always the case? Looks like the type face on the headstock changed / modernized at some point as well.Ī friend had a Harmony archtop years ago which was being used as a coat rack for a long time. (And I keep wanting to spell it with two Rs like the NMexican city and the Sinatra / Dawg tune.) I had thought the "faux finish" topped Montereys were the later ones but clearly they were pulling that off long ago. Interesting catalog page you posted, Mike.
